Birmingham's education, training and research facilities are second to none. There are three universities in Birmingham with a total student population of over 73,000, and a further twelve universities within a one hour drive of Birmingham city centre. Universities:

Aston University

Founded in 1895 and a University since 1966, Aston is known for the world-class quality of its teaching and research. The University's campus, based in Birmingham city centre, houses all facilities for its 9,500 students, as well as a conference centre and hotel. Aston has strong links to industry and commerce, and through its Business Partnership Unit offers a wide range of services to business. Over 70% of Aston students take a placement year and the University is consistently independently ranked in the top 10 in the UK for graduate employment.

Birmingham City University

Birmingham City University is one of the country's newest universities and at the same time it is one of the country's oldest educational institutions, as several of the constituent colleges are well over one hundred years old. Birmingham City University generates in total more than £5million in creating new knowledge.

University of Birmingham


With a century's tradition of inspiration and innovation, the University of Birmingham is one of the major centres of academic research in the UK.  Now with around 25,600 students, 6,000 staff and an annual turnover approaching £300 million, the University is a net importer of talent to the region, with around 40% of its graduates choosing to make their career in the region.

University College Birmingham

University College Birmingham is based in Birmingham City Centre, there are 7,500 students on Further and Higher Education programmes including 1100 international students from 63 countries. 

Birmingham Metropolitan College


Birmingham Metropolitan College has a reputation for being one of the most successful and popular colleges in Birmingham, attracting students from all over the West Midlands and overseas. The college is a Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in Integrated Manufacturing Technology and a partner in Centre of Vocational Excellence in Business and Professional.

Newman University College

Newman has an excellent record for the quality of its courses and consistently has one of the best graduate employment rates of UK colleges and universities. Newman's mission is centred on the Catholic values of tolerance and inclusion. Newman has one of the best graduate employment rates of UK universities and was ranked in the top 20 in The Sunday Times University Guide 2010.

Birmingham Colleges:

Birmingham Conservatoire

Established over 100 years ago, Birmingham Conservatoire (the Faculty of Music) is recognised as one of the major national colleges of music centring on performance and composition. Birmingham Institute of Art and Design is one of the largest faculties of art, design and media education in the United Kingdom.

Aston Business School

Founded in 1967 and one of the leading Business schools in the United Kingdom, ABS is in the 1% of the business schools worldwide who hold a triple accreditation from the three largest MBA ranking associations AMBA, AACSB and EQUIS. 

The Business School

The Business School is a major centre for business and management education. It has a strong regional base and a national and international perspective. With over 4,000 students studying on full and part-time courses, it is one of the largest business schools in the UK.

The College of Law

The College of Law in Birmingham, built in 2001, was the first all-purpose law school to be built in the UK for 20 years. The College offers post-graduate legal training for those intending to qualify as lawyers as well as professional development courses for qualified lawyers.

The Technology Innovation Centre (tic)

The Technology Innovation Centre (tic) at Millennium Point is a faculty of Birmingham City University and a national centre of excellence for learning, innovation and technology transfer.
