Birmingham to make its presence known at MIPIM 2012

Business Birmingham and the city’s business community are joining forces once more to promote Birmingham’s investment opportunities at MIPIM 2012, the world’s leading real estate event.

Birmingham is hosting an extensive events programme during each day of MIPIM. The city will be showcasing its strengths in connectivity and infrastructure, and outlining investment opportunities resulting from initiatives including the Big City Plan and HS2. The involvement of 16 partners from the private and public sectors across the city, meanwhile, will demonstrate its collaborative environment and supportive business networks.

The partners gathered on 17th November at Squire Sanders Hammonds’ offices in Birmingham, to discuss the themes and key events that will help to promote Birmingham to MIPIM’s 18,600 attendees from 90 countries.

Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council, commented:

Birmingham is proof of how the public and private sectors can work together to successfully regenerate a city. Major infrastructure schemes such as New Street Station’s Gateway project and the £188.8 million Library of Birmingham are transforming the city for businesses and residents alike by creating jobs and boosting the local economy. Whilst efforts to align our investment strategy with our visitor economy plans have clearly helped Birmingham to create a development pipeline of 28 hotels.

This year we are already working closely together to create a powerful and targeted campaign at MIPIM 2012, but there are still opportunities for new partners to join us. Showcasing Birmingham to thousands of international delegates, financiers, investors and developers will undoubtedly continue to grow the city’s profile as a leading business destination – and attract private sector funding to grow its pipeline of new developments even further.”

Simon Dingle, Operations Director with Carillion, Birmingham City Council’s construction partner for the new Library of Birmingham, added:

Birmingham’s interactive stand at MIPIM 2011 was a huge success; it raised the city’s profile significantly with investors, despite competition from other locations both across the UK and internationally. We are looking forward to be taking part in the event again next year, to boost Birmingham’s reputation even further.”

Birmingham will have plenty to showcase at MIPIM 2012, including the establishment of the UK’s only Enterprise Zone in a city centre location, and its growing visitor economy – which rose to 32.8 million in 2010 from 32.6 million in 2009, bucking the national trend of a decline in visitor numbers. The city is also spending more on transport infrastructure during the next five years than it has in the past 25 years.
