Birmingham is an easy place to start a business. It is large, but not too large, and definitely still has that sense of community which makes it easy to network with other businesses. The city also has great transport links connecting it to the rest of the UK, lower office space rents, and a really diverse and creative culture. Historically, Birmingham has had a beating heart of a manufacturing city, and this is now being expanded upon as it embarks on developing its creative industries arm. The city is seeing innovative companies in the digital space emerge and it is really exciting to be part of that. There are a number of digital media companies based in the city, and it is establishing itself as a centre of excellence in this sector. The connectivity of broadband and mobile networks is excellent and it can now host high traffic sites which wasn’t possible a few years ago. As a place to do business, Birmingham has everything. The council and its development agencies really support start-up companies, helping with location and local knowledge. I chose to locate my business in Birmingham primarily because the city is really going places and I think my business will benefit from that. Also its office rents offer much more value for money than Manchester or London, but because its excellent transport links, you don’t feel cut off from the rest of the country.
