New Street Station

New Street Station is currently undergoing a massive transformation. This scheme will completely redevelop the station and surrounding land, transforming it into an internationally renowned and used space.

The aim of the scheme is to improve capacity. The scheme will also improve perceptions of the station/city, improve travel experiences and attract further investment/business into the city. Birmingham New Street's annual passenger capacity is set to increase to 52 million a year on completion of the £600 million redevelopment of the station, transforming the hub of the nation’s rail network into a spectacular 21st century gateway.

Economic Impact: 

• For the first year in which redevelopments are visible, ‘visual amenity’ benefits are valued at £74 million (PV)
• £200 million of private sector investment will be brought into Birmingham and the West Midlands
• The increase of competitiveness of the tourism sector would create a further £1.5 - £3 million (PV).
