Air

Birmingham Airport is the UK’s second largest airport outside London. The Airport has around 50 airlines operating to more than 140 destinations worldwide, including daily departures to New York Newark Airport with Continental Airlines, plus twice daily services to Dubai with Emirates, and frequent direct scheduled and charter flights across Europe.

The future for Birmingham Airport looks bright and forecasts show that by 2030 it could cater for some 27million people, with the runway extension accounting for four million of this number.  In the short term, the Airport recently opened a £50m extension to Terminal One.  The new ‘International Pier’ replaces the current out-dated facility constructed in 1984 and is the single biggest investment that the Airport has made in over 20 years.

It provides the Airport with facilities to enable it to meet the growing demand for international services to global destinations from Birmingham and is capable of accommodating ‘next generation’ environmentally-efficient wide-bodied aircraft such as the Airbus A350 or the Boeing 787 ‘Dreamliner’, as well as the larger aircraft types already seen at Birmingham today like the Airbus A330 and Boeing 747 and 777.

In 2010 it has embarked on a major £13m redevelopment programme to merge its two terminals into a single facility to improve its passenger flows and operational efficiency, which will lead to a larger centralised passenger security search area, an enlarged meeting & greeting arrivals point, and improved shopping and catering facilities offered in both landside and airside areas. This project will be completed before the summer season 2011.

Access and Transport Links

  • Birmingham Airport’s success is partly down to its unique location. Situated in the heart of England, it lies in the centre of the UK’s motorway network providing convenient access to all major UK cities, including Birmingham City Centre, just 8 miles away.
  • Furthermore, Birmingham is one of the UK’s only airports served by a mainline station and trains from its on-site station make a 10 minute journey eight times an hour to Birmingham New Street Station in the heart of the City Centre. This position is exploited by an Air-Rail Link which transports people between the Railway station and into the heart of the passenger terminals in just 90 seconds, and can carry as many as 1,600 people every hour. These various elements allow the Airport to offer a seamless travel experience, enabling travellers to get from A to B in the most convenient and cost effective way.
  • Other through trains run through International to the Northeast, Northwest and Scotland.
