10.30 – 11am: How to build your brand on a budget
Naeem Alvi, founder and managing director of Birmingham-based Notepad Studio draws upon his experience in helping countless businesses to define and grow their brands, without spending the earth. A branding expert with a portfolio that includes global brands like Nike and Adidas, and local organisations such as Birmingham Hippodrome and Whisk, Naeem will share how to build a brand people love.
11.05 – 11.35am: PR with a passion – Insights into starting and growing a business
Tara Tomes set up EAST VILLAGE, a PR, marketing and events company in 2013. It has now become one of the Midlands’ most promising agencies. The agency’s impressive client list includes Birmingham Cocktail Weekend, Edinburgh Gin, EF MEDISPA, and Malmaison. Tara will share her experience on how to obtain effective PR and how to manage your business’ reputation on and offline.

11.50 – 12.20pm: Why entrepreneurship is nothing to do with business
Joel Blake OBE is a multi award-winning entrepreneur, with over 15 years experience in developing other businesses owners. He will be sharing his practical insight on how to develop an entrepreneurial leadership mindset to achieve success. Joel is currently working with the Greater Birmingham & Solihull LEP leading on the strategy to help grow and improve access to finance for small businesses across the region. He was awarded an OBE for Services to Business Support & Enterprise in 2016.
12.25 – 12.55pm: Structure your business to success
Simon Kallu, founder and managing director of multi-award-winning SRK Accounting, grew his business into a seven figure revenue company within six years and with no debt finance. He will run through the importance of choosing the right form of legal entity to suit your goals and highlight the financial, tax and accounting considerations of starting a new business.
1pm: Lunch break – Grab a lunch pack and go network
2 – 2.30pm The dark art of navigating Facebook’s algorithm
David Glenwright, head of training and special projects at JC Social Media, will provide a breakdown of how Facebook decides what content to show to whom annd how you can use this to maximise exposure for your business.
David was included on the 2018 Enterprise Nation and Experian Top 50 Advisers list and is an official trainer for Facebook’s She Means Business campaign delivered by Enterprise Nation.
2.35 – 3.15pm: Phil Neale, founder of Snoozle interviewed by Mike Bandar, co-founder of Hopper HQ and founding partner of Turn Partners
In September 2017 Phil left his job as brand manager of a £1.3 billion brand (Tesco Finest*) to focus full time his own start-up, Snoozle. In October, Snoozle quickly became the number one investment opportunity on Europe’s Largest Crowdfunding platform, reaching its £100,000 target within just nine hours of going live!
You may also recognise Phil from his appearance in the 2015 live final of Britain’s Got Talent. He performed with his two brothers and dad as The Neales, before reaching number six in the official UK music charts in 2016!

Simon Veasey, director of business development and initiative for Social Entrepreneurs CIC, interviews three of the dynamic social enterprises that helped Birmingham obtain its recent Social Enterprise City status. Find out what a social enterprise is and whether it’s for you.

Gymshark, an online retailer aimed at 16-25 year olds, was ranked Britain’s fastest growing private company in 2016 by the Sunday Times Fast Track 100. Sales are set to top £100m this year, up from £41m in 2017. Gymshark, which made profits of £8.2m last year, sells to 177 countries. The brand has boosted sales using Instagram where its main account has 2.1m followers. Learn from the best!
