Future Connectivity (HS2)

Birmingham is at the centre of a £56 billion high speed rail project, which will see major engineering, construction and procurement functions developed in the city. Situated at the centre of the UK’s rail network and a strategic location in some of the UK’s largest rail infrastructure projects, Birmingham is the ideal location for business to take advantage of such opportunities.

In 2012, the Government gave the go-ahead for a UK High Speed Rail network, called High Speed Two (HS2). HS2 will be a Y-shaped rail network providing direct, high capacity, high speed rail links between London and Birmingham and on to Manchester and Leeds. It will improve capacity across the rail network, shorten journey times between Britain’s major cities, boost the UK economy and create tens of thousands of jobs. The project will will also transform Greater Birmingham’s transport links and presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to drive economic growth and prosperity across the region.

HS2 will generate £10 billion worth of supply chain contracts and huge redevelopment opportunities, including 140 hectares of land around Birmingham Curzon Street Terminus and 140 hectares at Birmingham Interchange Station. The region is already home to 25% of the UK’s advanced engineering sector with a critical mass of rail industry consultancies, capabilities and expertise.
