Higher Education

Our education opportunities

Birmingham and the region provide broad and deep education and training opportunities. From pre-school to post-graduate, the region can cater for every student’s needs and aspirations. At present we have over 75,000 students studying at five universities: Aston University, Birmingham City University, University of Birmingham, University College Birmingham and Newman University College.

Schooling

Our high academic standards demonstrate our commitment and investment in future generations. Based on A-level results alone, Birmingham has four of the top 15 schools in the country. In addition, 112 schools in the region have achieved ‘outstanding’ according to Ofsted.

Universities and colleges

Birmingham itself has five universities. Aston University and University of Birmingham achieve higher than the UK average for 2:1 or 1st class degrees and Aston has the highest employability scoring of all regional UK cities – 82% get jobs within six months of graduation. In addition, there are 20 universities within an hour of Birmingham, including three Russell Group Universities: University of Birmingham, University of Warwick and University of Nottingham.

Apprenticeships

As well as exceptional educational institutions, we offer our people the opportunity to specialise in skills and crafts that lead directly to future employment. Between 2010 and 2011, nearly 5,000 apprenticeship programmes were started – and in the West Midlands region, there were 30,000 schemes started between August 2011 and January 2012.
