Academic & Research Centres of Excellence

The region’s strong clinical and life sciences academic centres of excellence enable today’s global healthcare challenges to be explored and addressed by experts from healthcare, academia and industry.

The University of Birmingham

The University consists of five Colleges, four of which provide major contributions to Life Sciences research and education in Birmingham. These are the Colleges of Medical and Dental Sciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences and Engineering and Physical Sciences.

Together they push back the boundaries of translational research with the aim of finding solutions to big issues affecting society. There are five principal thematic Life Science research areas which bring together researchers from across the University and the wider Birmingham Life Science campus: Cancer and Genomic Sciences; Environment, Health and Wellbeing; Immunity and Infection, Inflammation and Chronic Diseases; and Bioengineering, Regeneration and Rehabilitation.”

The University works closely with NHS partners including Birmingham Health Partners (BHP), an exciting collaborative platform between the University, Birmingham Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Birmingham Women’s Hospital – to deliver world leading research activities in basic and clinical science.

Aston University

With its focus on the application of knowledge for economic & social benefit, Aston University has a distinct mission that sets it apart; to be the UK’s leading University for business, enterprise and the professions, where original research has a positive impact on the world.

The School of Life & Health Sciences pursues interdisciplinary research extending from the laboratory to the clinic. Work ranges from molecular and cellular, through neural systems and human behaviour, to the restoration of health and the study of individuals in health care and societal settings.

Aston University’s initiative for a Medical School in the heart of Birmingham has recently been endorsed by Leicester Medical School. Aston Medical School is planned to open to 60 undergraduate medical students growing to around 100 new medical students each year. It includes a research institute focused on cardiovascular diseases, maternity and child health allowing Aston Medical Research Institute to address the challenge of high perinatal mortality and also pre-eclampsia.

The new Medical School will build upon Aston University’s pioneering health research, including optometry, age-related illnesses such as dementia and chronic diseases including diabetes. The University is also home to the Aston Brain Centre, which specialises in epilepsy, dyslexia, autism, ADHD and sleeping disorders. It provides a referral service for the National Health Service and houses a brain scanner specifically for children – one of only three in the world.

Birmingham City University

Birmingham City University is the second largest of five universities in the city and with more than 7,000 students, is one of the largest providers of nursing and healthcare education. The university has recently invested £41 million in new facilities that promise a major contribution to the health and wellbeing of Greater Birmingham.

The expansion of the University’s campus in Edgbaston will feature specialist laboratories for a newly created School of Life Sciences, offering a range of courses in health, nutrition and biomedicine. The 10,000m² building will reinforce Birmingham City University’s status as the region’s largest provider of qualified health and social care professionals.

Institute of Digital Health

The Institute of Digital Healthcare (IDH) is hosted by, Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), in partnership with the Warwick Medical School (WMS), and supported by the NHS. IDH aims to improve people’s health and wellbeing through the development, evaluation and use of innovative digital technologies and services.

The IDH model of research-led innovation in healthcare entails identifying real problems, understanding them by identifying relevant theories, selecting appropriate technologies and developing new solutions where necessary. Each solution then needs rigorous evaluation for safety, effectiveness and cost implications before promotion to healthcare systems.

The IDH works closely with industry, the NHS and across many disciplinary boundaries. It employs experts in biomedical and information engineering, health psychologists, statisticians and clinicians with public health, hospital medicine and community health backgrounds.

Universities Centre 

The Universities Centre, due to open in 2016, is designed to make it easier for SMEs to engage with Birmingham’s five universities, and will help to accelerate digital health innovation. It is co-located with Aston University and iCentrum, an incubator for digital and creative start-ups.

Unrivalled Clinical Research

Greater Birmingham has strong Life Sciences research capabilities, where NHS and private research facilities are supported by an outstanding academic research base at local universities. Global leaders GlaxoSmithKline, Eli Lilly, Pfizer, UCB Celltech, AstraZeneca, Celgene and Novartis have all supported Life Sciences research at the University of Birmingham, while Aston University’s collaborators include The Wellcome Trust and Spectrum Théa.

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is one of the leading hospital trusts in Europe. The city’s state-of-the-art hospital facilities include the £545 million Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), home to the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe, the largest renal transplant programme in the UK, the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) and has the world’s largest single-floor critical care unit.

Accelerated Trials

Birmingham’s unique infrastructure offers an integrated research and innovation platform that spans discovery, development, validation, clinical implementation, and ultimately evaluation, completing the full circle of translational medicine. The ITM will play a key role in facilitating this, making it the go-to location for accelerated execution and adoption of clinical trials in a real life setting.

The University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (part of the Birmingham Health Partners strategic alliance) currently hosting one of the largest specialist Cancer Trials Unit in the UK, and are internationally recognised for delivering clinical programmes for liver, renal and stem cell transplantation over the last two decades.

Investment in a £24 million Institute of Translational Medicine now provides a centre of excellence across a range of major health issues including cancer and liver disease, complementing the Centre for Clinical Haematology at the QEHB, which hosts an internationally competitive early phase clinical trials portfolio.

Royal Centre for Defence Medicine

Population

Greater Birmingham has one of the most diverse populations in the UK and combined with its diversity in socio-economics, the region provides an unrivalled patient catchment area.

Birmingham itself has the youngest population of any UK city and is at the centre of a non-transient regional population of over five million. A potential cohort of patients which is both large and well-phenotyped.
