Close to the University of Birmingham and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, development is underway for a cutting edge Life Sciences Campus. This will create up to 50,000sqm of new floor space across a number of 3-4 storey buildings in a campus setting, providing a high quality environment for new and growing businesses.
The space will be suitable for research and development, clinical trials, pharmaceutical manufacturing and regional headquarters; an ideal expansion destination for SMEs from around the world.
The Life Sciences Campus is located within an internationally- recognised clinical academic community whose competitive advantages are unrivalled in the UK with the successful commercialisation of healthcare innovation.
This includes the new Institute of Translational Medicine, a world class clinical research facility, which will play a pivotal role in supporting the expansion of life sciences research and education in Birmingham and the region.
It will facilitate SMEs and large pharma and biotechnology firms to work more closely with clinicians and academics, and create an effective entry for industry partners e.g. Pharma, Diagnostics, Medical Devices and Digital Health into the complex world of healthcare research and routes to market.
The wider Edgbaston area already provides a world class centre of scientific excellence with a proliferation of hospitals, medical organisations, specialist care centres, GP clinics and routine care facilities as well as training facilities.
Working with membership organisations such as MediLink West Midlands, and WMAHSN, region wide industry and collaboration specialists, companies have access to comprehensive industry knowledge and meetings with industry experts, who will help develop businesses and maximise the commercial opportunities within the network.
Located at the heart of Greater Birmingham’s Life Sciences campus, the Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) is a world class facility that capitalises on Birmingham being one of the few centres internationally that can provide a bespoke multidisciplinary translational environment for development and delivery of stratified medicine, clinical trials, rare diseases, biomarkers and device evaluation.
As a central meeting point and working hub, it will allow clinicians, academics, bioinformaticians, patient groups and industry leaders to maximise interaction and develop productive collaborative networks.
It will facilitate the swift assessment of cost-effective new drugs and medical devices to bring them to market faster and to frontline use within clinical settings. The ITM is expected to support the creation of 600 new jobs within the research community in its first five years.
The ITM is being delivered by Birmingham Health Partners, a collaboration that brings together the clinical, scientific and academic excellence of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), the University of Birmingham (UoB) and Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BCH), and Birmingham Women’s Hospital (BWH).

Birmingham Research Park is a thriving community of medical and biomedical activity. Based at the University of Birmingham, the park’s flagship offering is The BioHub Birmingham®; a fully serviced biomedical laboratory and vibrant innovation office designed to provide entrepreneurs and start-ups with access to affordable facilities and equipment. The new facility has been enabled by a £7 million investment by the ERDF, University of Birmingham and Birmingham City Council.
At the heart of the burgeoning healthcare cluster, the 27 acre site currently comprises the Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry, a BUPA Care Home, and a new Circle Health Private Hospital, bringing industry and academia together into a hub of collaboration and best practice across clinical and medical platforms.
This £50 million project is the first integrated dental hospital and school built in the UK for almost 40 years and offers 154 dental chairs. It is equipped to treat over 120,000 patients a year and provides world class learning and research facilities for more than 600 students. It offers a wide range of clinical services including emergency dental care, restorative dentistry, oral surgery and medicine, orthodontics and paediatric dentistry.
The planned central super hospital involves £300 million worth of public and private investment generating greater opportunities surrounding medical technology, staffing, sub-contracting and research. The hospital site will span 16 acres, and provide 670 beds and will expand on the services currently offered by Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, whilst the concentration of acute specialist care will attract and retain highly skilled clinicians to the region.
The West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (WMAHSN) leads, catalyses and drives co-operation, collaboration and productivity between academia, industry, health and care providers and commissioners, and citizens, and accelerates the adoption of innovation to generate continuous improvement in the region’s health and wealth.
On behalf the West Midlands’ population, WMAHSN’s mission is to deliver improved healthcare outcomes and create economic growth by the spread of proven innovations at scale and pace regionally, nationally and internationally.
MediLink WM, a membership organisation with a remit to stimulate growth and innovation in the medical and health technology sector, operates as the Industry Gateway for WMAHSN.
