Top West Midlands entrepreneurs to pass on their knowledge at StartUp 2017

  • Hundreds to attend day-long Birmingham event
  •  Satellite events in London and Bristol, attracting thousands overall
  •  Powerful keynote speakers, adviser zones

Rebecca Struthers and Mike Bandar are joining other city-based entrepreneurs to pass on their knowledge of running a business to the next generation of city start-ups.

They will be speaking in front of hundreds of people, who want to become their own boss or brush-up of their business skills at StartUp 2017 on Saturday/January 14.

The day-long event is set at Birmingham City University, one of three nationwide events to be run simultaneously by small business support group Enterprise Nation. It will deliver a big boost to ambitious would-be entrepreneurs in the city, at the same time as satellite events in London’s Canary Wharf and in Bristol.

Across the three epic sessions there will be 100s of talks from well-known entrepreneurs and experts including city-based Mike Bandar, co-founder of Real Tribe and Hopper HQ, Mike Beak from Ammba Digital and award-winning fitness entrepreneur Mel Bound, founder of This Mum Runs.

The day will be kicked off with a keynote from Jewellery Quarter-based Rebecca Struthers, who set up the eponymous Struthers London, and recently became the first watchmaker in British history to earn a PhD in time measurement Horology.

The event is the third new-year start-up event Enterprise Nation has run – and so far more than 4,000 eager self-starters have attended.

StartUp 2017 is a collaboration between Enterprise Nation and a collection of high profile sponsors. These are Facebook, small business insurer Direct Line for Business, HSBC, domain name firm 123 Reg, Microsoft and internet technology business Verisign. Leading UK professional services firm KPMG is the headline sponsor of the events.

Enterprise Nation founder Emma Jones said:

“Even global political turmoil can’t deter thousands of people from wanting to take control of their destiny and be their own boss. Every single minute of the day, a business is started in the UK, come rain or shine.

“Every year we help those with heartfelt ambitions of starting-up or wishing to brush-up on their skills to pick up very practical advice on subjects like finance and social media, link up with like-minded individuals, get the inspiration to help give their new business idea the very best start, or take their existing business to the next level.

“It’s a whirlwind of a day and leaves everyone’s heads spinning – but it’s the perfect way to absorb everything you need to know before you take the next step.”

Professor Julian Beer, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Birmingham City University, said:

“StartUp 2017 is the perfect opportunity for people to get the kind of key advice and support they need to make the move towards starting their own business or becoming their own boss.

“Birmingham is well known for being one of the country’s start-up hotspots and the continued growth of small businesses here, and in the wider West Midlands, can play a key role in underpinning the future prosperity of our economy. That is why this will prove such an important event.”

Other speakers in Birmingham include PR expert Chris Brown, whose clients have included London 2012 Olympics as well as Southside Business Improvement District, closer to home. There will also be a chance to hear how to pitch from Joe Hodder at Entrepreneurial Spark and social media expert Laura Hogan.

Bivek Sharma, Head of KPMG Small Business Accounting, said:

“StartUp 2017 truly is one of the biggest and most important events in the UK for start-ups and small businesses. It offers inspiration and networking mixed with practical tips on everything you need to know before you start – and how you can inject productivity and growth into an existing concern. We are looking forward to welcoming thousands of businesses on the day.”

Richard Bearman, UK Director of Small Business at HSBC, said:

“Small businesses are the backbone of the UK economy, and HSBC is passionate about supporting their ambitions and growth plans. StartUp 2017 is set to be the biggest and best yet. I can’t wait to be involved again and am excited to be co-hosting at our offices in Canary Wharf.”

The day will also offer the chance to speak face-to-face with a business adviser.
