Vegetable samosa brings home the gold for Brum sisters

A Birmingham-based Indian food firm, co-founded by an Aston University student, has won a gold award for their ‘free from’ vegetable samosa.

Sisters Geeta, 30, and Reena Salhan, 24, based in Great Barr, received the award in the ‘food manufactured for food service’ category for their business Green Sisters in the

FreeFrom Eating Out Awards – who promote innovation and excellence in ‘free from’ food outlets.

The business was established due to challenges faced by the pair’s family, as co-founder Geeta was medically diagnosed as a coeliac, meaning she had to eliminate gluten from her diet.

Reena and Geeta have now made it their business to ensure people who follow particular diets, whether by choice or for medical reasons, are able to eat high quality, authentic ‘free from’ food that they can trust.

Reena Salhan, a graduate of Aston Business School and co-founder of Green Sisters, said:

“I’m absolutely ecstatic to have received the award. Geeta and I both worked tirelessly to perfect the recipe so winning this award has been very fulfilling for both of us.”

The sisters were able to start their business thanks to the Birmingham Skills for Enterprise and Employability Network (BSEEN), which offers students and graduates intensive start-up support for new ventures. Successful participants benefit from a variety of workshops, networking opportunities, mentoring, as well as grants and workspace to get the company going.

Reena, who studied International Business and Economics, added:

“The opportunity to participate in the BSEEN programme has been invaluable to us and our business, through offering exposure but also access to mentorship.

“The support we have received has been amazing. In particular, the week-long bootcamp at the beginning of the programme really helped to kickstart our business and allowed us to think about the finer details; such as learning about various aspects of business from branding right the way through to intellectual property.

“Having spent four years at Aston Business School, it’s been so rewarding to be able to take all I learned at university and apply it in the real world. It has has given me the confidence to become an entrepreneur, and I’m amazed at how well it is going for us so far.

“We are so pleased to receive this recognition as it is a testament to our products being free from compromise – something that we live by and strive to achieve in every aspect of our business.”
